The history of Glashütte
Glashütte isn't a single brand, but a region in Germany steeped in over 175 years of watchmaking prestige. In 1845, spurred by Ferdinand Adolph Lange's vision, Glashütte transformed from a struggling town into a watchmaking hub. A government-backed watchmaking school attracted talented artisans, leading to the establishment of independent workshops known for their precision pocket watches and innovative complications.
The early 20th century, the "Glashütte Designation of Origin" was created to ensure quality standards and the rise of the iconic "three-quarter plate" movement, showcasing intricate mechanics through a large, decorated plate. World wars and economic hardship challenged the industry, but Glashütte persevered. Post-war consolidation led to larger companies like VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB) and the creation of affordable timepieces.
